Oman Refinery Equipment: Selection Guide

OmanOQrefinery

Equipment selection for Omani refineries — process equipment, instrumentation, and the OQ vendor framework.

Oman's refining sector is concentrated around OQ (the integrated energy company formed from the consolidation of Orpic and related entities) and the supporting petrochemical operations in Sohar, Salalah and Duqm. This guide is an engineer's reference for equipment selection on Omani refinery projects — process equipment, instrumentation, and electrical balance.

The refining estate

Three primary sites:

  • Sohar Refinery and Sohar Refinery Improvement Project complex — the larger industrial node.
  • Mina Al Fahal refinery in Muscat — older, smaller, geographically constrained.
  • Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries Company (joint venture) — newer, larger, on the Indian Ocean coast.

Equipment categories for refinery projects

Process equipment

Reactors, columns, vessels, heat exchangers, fired heaters, and the supporting piping fabrication. Material selection is critical — sour-service, hot-service, and corrosive-service positions need specific materials (Inconel-clad, monel, stainless variants).

Rotating equipment

Pumps (centrifugal and reciprocating), compressors (centrifugal and reciprocating), fans, mixers. Spares demand is steady — bearings, mechanical seals, couplings, shaft assemblies.

Mechanical seals

A specialist subcategory but a large procurement line item. Cartridge designs dominate; double seals for hazardous fluids; dry-gas seals on compressors. Iraqi and Omani refineries alike often run 5–10 year seal upgrade programmes that consolidate seal selection across the pump fleet.

Instrumentation and analyzers

The refinery instrumentation list is long and homogeneous — transmitters, control valves, on-off valves, level instruments, analyzers, safety devices. Procurement is often consolidated into shutdown packages.

Electrical and automation

MV switchgear, distribution transformers, MCC panels, motors, drives, DCS hardware, PLC for package equipment, SIS for ESD/F&G/BMS.

Selection considerations specific to Oman

  • Coastal location at Sohar and Duqm — salt-air corrosion, requires upgraded materials on outdoor equipment.
  • Ambient temperature — broadly similar to Saudi Arabia and Iraq, with full derating required on electronics and motors.
  • Vendor approval typically follows OQ's engineering specifications; substitution requires formal equivalence approval.

Procurement workflow

  1. 01Technical bid against OQ engineering specifications.
  2. 02Manufacturer pre-qualification where required.
  3. 03Factory acceptance testing with buyer witness.
  4. 04Sea freight to Sohar, Salalah or Duqm; air freight via Muscat for urgent items.
  5. 05Customs clearance — Omani customs is efficient and predictable.
  6. 06On-site delivery and turnaround integration.
